Best-known in the spanish speaking world for A Universal History of the Destruction of Books: From Ancient Sumer to Modern-Day Iraq, a classic essay which documents the catastrophic loss of books, Báez is also a novelist and poet. He was awarded the “Vintila Horia” Prize for his study about Alexandrian library. After his trip to Iraq in 2003 he has himself engaged in travel writing, publishing in 2004 his travel chronicle The Cultural Destruction of Iraq, with a foreword by Noam Chomsky. Many of his writings concern the relationship, between book burning and intellectual power. In 2005, he published The Cambridge translator, a first novel.
